After spending some time in Gera, the Cultural Trail takes us northwards – firstly to Tinz Church – and then to the Langenberg neighbourhood, where we find a winged altar dating back to 1491 in the “Fourteen Holy Helpers” Church.
Distance 58 km
We then travel next to the White Elster river to Bad Köstritz with its historical town complex, its castle park dating from the Reuss period and its brewery. It is worth making a detour to neighbouring Bad Klosterlausnitz. A church in Neo-Romanesque style was rebuilt on the site of the former Augustinian monastery here in 1863-66. The triumphal cross in the impressive interior was crafted in about 1235. We then make a wide sweep around Gera to discover interesting churches in Münchenbernsdorf, Taubenpreskeln and Gera-Lusan.
The Heinrich-Schütz House in Bad Köstritz recalls the work of the important composer, who was born here in 1585; it is a research and memorial site.
And in the city museum of Gera, you will get a closer view not only to the history of the town itself, but with a miniature the former residence of the reeves: Osterstein Castle.
