The 225 most beautiful kilometers through the Vogtland begin and end at the Göltzschtal Bridge, the largest brick bridge in the world. With twelve daily stages between 12 and 24 kilometers in length, the circular route is manageable for most experienced hikers. Of course, there are also sections for shorter tours. Via the Köhlersteig, the trail first leads toward Greiz in the Thuringian Vogtland region through Vogtland Switzerland and west past the lace town of Plauen.

The next stages cross the legendary Burgstein area, pass the Pirk Dam and Oelsnitz, before the Vogtland Panorama Trail reaches the Saxon state spas of Bad Elster and Bad Brambach. After a detour to the Czech Republic, hikers find themselves in Markneukirchen and experience the traditional "Musikwinkel" with the towns of Erlbach and Klingenthal, where the 936-meter-high Aschberg is directly on the tour.

Through Morgenröthe-Rautenkranz with the German Space Exhibition, the route goes around the Grünheide forest park, where it turns towards the Westerzgebirge mountains and takes in Schönheide. After the beer village of Wernesgrün, known for its Wernesgrüner beer, Rodewisch and Lengenfeld soon come into view, followed by the imposing Mylau Castle, and the route comes full circle at the Göltzschtal Bridge.

Destination

“Göltzschtalbrücke” bridge near Mylau / Netzschkau

Turn-by-turn directions

Stage 1:

From the largest brick bridge in the world, the idyllic Köhlersteig leads through the wildly romantic gorge of the Göltzsch to where it flows into the Weiße Elster. A true prelude to measure, before it goes, no less beautiful, along the Elster upstream to the Elstertalbrücke near Jocketa.

Stage 2:

From the Elster Valley Bridge, the route heads into the beautiful old town of Plauen, the capital of the Vogtland region. A rewarding extension leads to the Vogtland mill district, to the mysterious dragon cave of Syrau, Saxony's only natural stalactite caveand to the last tower Dutch windmill in the Vogtland.

Stage 3:

From Zwoschwitz, the third stage leads through the central Vogtland hilltop landscape, touches the Pirk dam and passes through the former mining area of Schönbrunn - Huthaus. The destination is the old town of Oelsnitz with Voigtsberg Castle visible from afar.

Stage 4:

It continues south to the Saxon state spa of Bad Elster. Shortly before, however, it builds in a detour through the valleys and forests of the Elster Mountains, to near the German-Czech border.

Stage 5:

From state spa to state spa, the fifth stage of the Vogtland Panorama Trail® leads along the border between the Czech Republic and Germany. Experienced hikers are recommended to include a short variant over the roof of the Elster Mountains, the Hainberg (Czech:Haj).

Stage 6:

The tour leads from Bad Brambach to the observation tower on the Kapellenberg and back to the Saxon State Spa. The 759-meter-high hilltop offers a wide view of nearby Egerland, which you can get a little closer to on a variant via Schönberg.

Stage 7:

This culturally influenced stage leads through the "Musikwinkel" to Markneukirchen, the capital of musical instrument making. Worth seeing on the way is the Vogtland open-air museum in Landwüst.

Stage 8:

The foothills of the high hilltops at the transition from the Elster to the Ore Mountains form the framework of the mountain stage. The trail still remains in the valley, but forms a first pleasant foretaste of the following days in the mountains.

Stage 9:

The first real mountain stage can be completed briefly and "painlessly" on the direct route via Klingenthal to the Aschberg, allowing enough time for a stroll through the music and winter sports town.

Stage 10:

The stage via Morgenröthe-Rautenkranz to Vogelsgrün is all about the stars. In the German Space Exhibition you can learn all about the Russian and American space missions.

Stage 11:

Today we leave the mountainous landscape of the Vogtland. Once again, a high mountain has to be climbed. This is followed by a long descent to Rodewisch, where you will meet the Göltzsch again after 10 days - the goal is within reach!

Stage 12:

The final chord back to the Göltzschtal bridge is coming up. A final climb to Wilhelmshöhe promises another panoramic view from the Perlaser Tower there, before heading back to the starting point via Mylau Castle.
