The remains of the medieval fortifications in Schmölln can still be seen at Eichberg Hill.
The buildings and estates of the former monastery had passed to Heinrich Reuss von Plauen and a feudal castle, a powerful water castle and a town wall, which surrounded the complete town and was up to 8 metres high, were built at that time. There was a wooden watchtower every 10 metres along the wall. The town wall has been carefully restored and bears testimony to Schmölln’s long history.
