The oldest part of the fortifications with the strong castle keep date back to the 12th and 13th centuries.
The castle and sovereign rights were given by the Reeves of Plauen as a fiefdom during this period. Posterstein was owned by various noble families during the following centuries and they converted and extended the complex in Renaissance and later Baroque style. The late Baroque carving work made from lime tree wood in the church next to the castle is particularly worth seeing. It is a work made by the otherwise unknown artist, Johannis Hopf, and was made for the lord of the castle at that time, Georg Dietrich von Pfug. The elaborate carving work involves the altar, pulpit and the separate seating for the patron with his family coat of arms. The small parish is a popular destination for outings in the south of the Altenburg region.
