As the oldest church in the town and the parent church in the region, St Lawrence’s Church is very important in historical terms and is one of the major attractions in Hof.

St Lawrence’s was first mentioned in documents in 1214, but a chapel probably already existed at the site before this. St Lawrence’s was the parent church of a parish that covered (Bad) Steben in the west, Gefell in the north, Eichigt and Rossbach/Hranice in the east and Sparneck in the south in the late Middle Ages.

Disputes arose in connection with many daughter churches, particularly in the east, about whether they were part of Brandenburg-Kulmbach or the Electorate of Saxony. The most valuable artworks in the church are found to the left and right of the altar: a crucifix dating back to the period after 1500 and a Late Gothic winged altar with five panels (1480-86).

The opening times apply to the church and café from May to mid-October. The parish office is open: Tuesday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., and Wednesday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

You can reach Hof with the Deutsche Bahn from Nuremberg (RE) or from Dresden with the Mitteldeutsche Regiobahn. There are also connections to Eger via Selb and to Leipzig via Gera. You can get information at www.bahn.de

By road

Hof is located on the A 9 and A 72 motorways. From the direction of Nuremberg, take the Hof-West exit, from Berlin, take the A 72 at the Bavarian Vogtland triangle and take the Hof-Nord exit towards the center. From the east on the A 72 take the Töpen exit and drive on the B 2 towards Hof-Zentrum. From Regensburg or Eger, take the A-93 exit Hof-Ost and take the B 173 to the center of Hof.
