Oberkotzau was the ancestral seat of the lords of Kotzau, who had arrived in the area in the wake of the Reeves of Weida and had spread out as ministeriales within the boundaries of what is now the Rural District of Hof.
The church was burnt down by the Hussites in 1430. However, it was rebuilt in 1449. The church survived fires and huge floods. A dome was added in 1936 and it matches the overall appearance very well. Some of the members of the Franconian von Kotzau noble family were buried here. The grave inscriptions and commemorative plaques can still be seen on the church walls today. The church and its parish office are located not far from the point where the river Schwesnitz feeds into the Sächsische Saale river. The Bible footpath – which is unique in Germany – connects St James’ Church, which is Lutheran, with St Anthony’s, which is Roman Catholic, both geographically and across different denominations. 17 columns have been built along the footpath and they contain Bible verses for people to read.
