St. Mary’s Protestant Mountain Church in Schleiz

The mountain church high above the town is situated in a park-like mountain cemetery and has been a popular place to visit for more than 800 years.

Over time, the small chapel grew into this magnificent church, which is considered to be one of the most beautiful places of worship in Central Germany today. Church services, concerts and tourist events offer everyone a chance to experience this church with all their senses.

Especially worth seeing is the rich baroque decoration and the heavenly meadow from 1896/1897 along the Gothic vaulting.

In addition to being a place of worship, the mountain church also served as a selpulture church for the burgraves of Meißen, the Lords of Plauen, Gera, Lobenstein and Schleiz for 413 years. The Counts of Plauen and Gera, as well as the Princes Reuß of Schleiz and their families rest in the princely tombs, which were renovated until 2015,

The decedents of the Kospoth family rest underneath St. Anne’s Chapel and a number of civilian burials were discovered in the church nave during the last renovation between 1979 and 1983.

Peculiar: the hourglass on the pulpit.

Rare: the winged organ.

Unique: the altar crime story!
