This significant fortress from the Middle Ages equally fascinates visitors and archaeologists.
Burg Schönfels is one of the most impressive fortresses in Saxony, and gives interesting insight into the living conditions during the Middle Ages. The fortress is in excellent condition: the wall and moat, as well as the outer castle, the lower castle and the massive main castle with its keep have been preserved. In addition to the museum, many historic rooms are open for viewing, such as the late Gothic wooden parlour or the castle chapel with its unique wooden organ.
Visitors can often watch scientists at work, since archaeological investigations are still being carried out at the fortress.
