In the 1970s, the Weidatal reservoir was expanded through the addition of the Zeulenroda reservoir. Old watermills had to make place for the “Zeulenrodaer Meer”, and a new landscape was created. For a few years now, this new area can be discovered via the 45km-long reservoir hiking trail, which takes you around both dams in the Weida valley. It was certified as a “Quality Trail Wanderbares Deutschland” in 2009 and is, in part, handicapped accessible.
Idyllic streams, wooded areas and lookout points line the trail, which consists of 90% pristine paths. In summer, the many swimming areas are easily accessed from this trail.
